The leader of the Islamic State (IS) militant group in Afghanistan, known as Islamic State - Khurasan, was arrested by security forces, a statement by the Afghan Intelligence Agency (NDS) said on Saturday.
Abdullah Orokzai, who is also known as Aslam Farooqi, was arrested with 19 other IS members, among them two high-ranking commanders, the statement said. The arrest comes as the extremist group has claimed responsibility of an attack on a Sikh community temple in Kabul eleven days ago that left 25 people dead.
Islamic State claimed many deadly attacks in Afghanistan, mainly among the Shiite Hazara community since the group emerged in Afghanistan in 2015.
Farooqi had been active in several roles within the group, both in Pakistan and in Afghanistan, the statement read, adding that he took over as leader after the death of Abu Saeed Bajawori.
According to media reports, Bajawori was killed in 2018.
Farooqi was said to have confessed to links with intelligence agencies in the regions, the NDS added, but did not clarify where and when the IS leader was arrested.
