Qatar Joined countries across the globe to observe the World Autism Awareness Day on Thursday in solidarity with the global campaign by ‘Autism Speaks’ under the title ‘Illumination in Blue’.
To mark the day, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) lit their buildings in blue on Thursday evening.
The day was also observed by many ministries, authorities and public institutions in Qatar, including Qatar Free Zone Authority and the General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).
It is estimated that one out of every 160 children develop autism spectrum disorders. These disorders are characterised by the individual’s difficulties in interacting and communicating with the community.
Qatar entities participated in the campaign because of their belief in the need to educate and spread awareness about autism patients and emphasise their inclusion in society as well as their empowerment so that they contribute positively to the development process Qatar.
The United Nations General Assembly set the second day of April of each year to raise awareness of autism upon the proposal of Qatar in 2007.
