Reigning champions Al Sadd lost further ground on Al Duhail after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Al Arabi in the QNB Stars League on Thursday. The Wolves had last weekend suffered a shock 2-2 draw to Umm Salal.
Al Duhail had earlier beaten Al Shahania 3-1 to move seven points clear (39) of the reigning champions who are on 32 points.
Al Rayyan also pulled three points clear of Al Sadd thanks to Yacine Brahimi’s 69th minute penalty which enabled The Lions beat Al Ahli 1-0.
Akram Afif had put Al Sadd ahead just before the half hour mark with a lovely finish over Al Arabi goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada who was in inspired form.
The Wolves despite creating more chances failed to find the cutting edge up front as Baghdad Bounedjah, Afif, Marco Fabian and Nam Tae-Hee all missed chances to secure the win.
Al Arabi got the equaliser thanks to VAR which awarded a penalty against Boualem Khoukhi for handball in the box.
Pierre Lasogga made no mistake from the spot, sending a powerful effort past Saad al Sheeb much to Xavi Hernandez’s despair.
“It’s a big disappointment for us, we missed so many easy opportunities. The league jsut became very difficult after this result, the difference between us and Al Duhail has widened,” Xavi said after the match.
Meanwhile, Al Duhail overcame a battling Al Shahania side as Han Kwang-Song, Karim Boudiaf and Paulo Edmilson all found the net for Walid Regragui’s side.
Song continued his goalcscoring run with the opener in the fourth minute but Al Shahania surprising levelled in the 36th minute through Ahmed Akaichi after Ramin Rezaien had missed a penalty for the bottom-placed team.
A marginally-rattled Al Duhail came out for the second half with a renewed burst of energy. They were quickly back in front as Al Ahrak was once again the provider, with Boudiaf collecting his pass from the left and planting his shot inside the far post.
They were able to settle the match late on as Assim Madibo’s perfectly-timed ball over the top of the defence was met by Edmilson, who lobbed the keeper with the outside of his right foot to cap an impressive performance.
Al Rayyan ensured to keep pace with the leader as they beat Al Ahli 1-0.
Yacine Brahimi scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute. The Algerian attacking midfielder took his personal tally to 11 goals.
