With the emergence of a number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in neighbouring countries, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has intensified precautionary and preventive measures for early monitoring of any suspected cases of the virus.
In a statement on Thursday, the MoPH said the procedures for screening incoming travellers from different countries have been strengthened. All travellers arriving from the countries where the disease is spread are sent to the airport clinic to assess their health status. Suspected cases are sent for isolation at the Communicable Disease Center at Hamad Medical Corporation.
People who have come from countries with a high prevalence of infection are required to undergo 14 days of continuous health monitoring to ensure that they are free of the disease, the statement added.
The MoPH has also strengthened epidemiological surveillance activities. The statement stressed the importance of prevention measures that include maintaining general hygiene, washing hands with soap and water continuously, especially after sneezing and coughing.
It also recommended avoiding touching the eyes and nose if the hands are not clean and avoiding direct communication with people who have respiratory symptoms. This includes constant cleaning of surfaces and following the etiquette of covering the nose and mouth, as well as reducing some social etiquette that may contribute to spreading infection such as greeting by kissing the nose and handshaking.
It said the recommended behaviours would enhance the prevention of the spread of respiratory infections.
