QATAR’S Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs HE Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al Attiyah has named the wise leadership of HH the Amir of Qatar and the government, the people of Qatar and Qatar’s friends or allies as the “golden triangle” that helped the country withstand the challenges brought by the unjust blockade imposed on Qatar three years ago.
In a talk titled ‘Qatar and the Lessons from a 1,000 Day Blockade’ moderated by Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) Dean Dr Ahmad Dallal on Tuesday, Attiyah firmly said that Qatar’s story relating to the blockade is more of “1,000 days of victory”.
He narrated how in less than 72 hours Qatar was able to ensure that the supply of food in the country remained uninterrupted despite having more than 80 percent of Qatar’s food coming from the neighbouring blockading countries, or how Qatar was still able to fulfill its obligation of supplying 30 percent of the world’s natural gas needs, among others.
He said Qatar remained committed to its obligations to its people as well as to its friends and allies in the midst of crisis.
“The embargo or blockade imposed on Qatar did not only affect the region. It has affected the world. Qatar is the second natural gas exporter in the world. We supply 30 percent of the world needs. We have proven to our friends and allies that even in the worst situation, our country fulfills its obligations. We did not even cut the supply to our enemy who tried to destroy our country. Because, HH the Amir has a humanitarian perspective of the situation”, he added.
“This makes us resilient and find our way through all the crises they try to bring to us. As we speak today about the 1,000 day of blockade and embargo, we are counting down the1,000 days to the FIFA World Cup 2022. In Qatar, we don’t have time to look behind our shoulders. We are looking ahead”, he added.
Stressing the importance of alliances, he said, “Alliances is integral to Qatar’s vision. No country can stand the magnitude of the aggression we have faced, and this is unprecedented in history. But, because of these alliances, the third element in the ‘golden triangle’, we managed to find within less than 72 hours our friends in Asia, Far East, North America and other parts of the world sending us food.”
He reiterated the important role played by Qatar’s soft power in the face of crisis. “I believe in enhancing soft power. It does not mean media outlets. It’s 360 degrees soft power- educating your people, offering the best education, involving them in your political decision. This is the way that I believe you can counter any threats because your country is immune from within. Your people are the nation and the nation is your people”, Attiyah said.
