QATAR and the United Nations on Tuesday signed a declaration of intent to establish the United Nations Judicial Integrity Center for research and training in Doha, on the sidelines of the second high-level meeting of the Global Judicial Integrity Network held at the Sheraton Doha Hotel.
The declaration intent was signed by President of the Court of Cassation and President of Supreme Judiciary Council (SJC) HE Dr Hassan bin Lahdan al Hassan al Mohanadi and Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Executive Director John Brandolino.
The declaration of intent is a prelude to the final signing between the two sides to create an international research and training centre specialising in judicial integrity matters and a follow-up of the efforts of the SJC and its international partner towards creating the Global Judicial Integrity Network in 2018.
By hosting this UN centre, Doha will be a global centre for enhancing judicial capabilities and a reference for judicial institutional policies on integrity, through what it will provide to world judges in terms of training, consultations and opportunities to support academic and institutional research projects in the relevant fields.
The new centre will be part of the United Nations complex pledged by Qatar, which hosts a number of centres and headquarters of international organisations, especially the specialised or those with a professional personality.
Doha’s hosting of the UN center reflects the continued broad support by Qatar to the United Nations, based on its firm belief in the principles of international law.
Meanwhile, the SJC president said that Qatar’s hosting of the second high-level meeting of the Global Judicial Integrity Network reiterates the international legal community’s trust in Qatar’s belief in justice.
In his speech at the opening session of the second meeting of the network, Mohannadi pointed out that Qatar has become an international destination for meetings, conferences and seminars in all fields, which reflects the keenness of the wise leadership to bring peace and goodness to the world at large.
He affirmed that Qatar will always meet expectations and continue to be an aid for the deprived and a haven for the oppressed, as it believes that justice is the foundation of ruling.
He pointed out Qatar seeks to achieve an independent, impartial, unbiased, advanced and efficient judiciary as part of an ambitious programme that continues to develop justice systems.
He also emphasised the importance of the network’s second meeting that brought together an elite of justice and law from more than 120 countries, including representatives of judicial authorities and bodies and presidents of supreme courts, in addition to representatives of the United Nations, international bodies and organisations, civil society institutions and international personalities that are involved in international judicial cooperation. He expressed his confidence that this active participation in the work of this meeting will yield important results in the fields of international judicial and legal work.
