Vodafone Qatar invested around QR630 million in 2019 on strengthening its network, wireless internet services and improving the information technology infrastructure in the country, CEO Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah bin Jassim al Thani has said.
The telecom major’s investments in the local market will continue this year as well, he added.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the company’s Ordinary General Assembly Meeting on Monday, Sheikh Hamad expected the returns on the investments made by the company to have positive impact on its performance.
The CEO described the financial performance of the company during the past financial year as strong. Vodafone Qatar achieved a rise in profits for the eighth quarter in a row, and managed to increase profits before calculating finance, taxes, consumption and amortization by more than 20 percent during the fiscal year 2019. In addition, the net profit has recovered by about 21 percent to reach about QR143.7 million.
Sheikh Hamad said the company was able to achieve this success after managing its operations at a lower cost while increasing the numbers of its customers, whether in terms of mobile phones or fixed-line phones. The company also provided roaming services to more than 132 countries, and gave alternatives to home internet services in order to attract more customers.
He added Vodafone Qatar contributed to the development of the necessary infrastructure for communication services for two football stadiums.
On the coverage of its 5G network, Sheikh Hamad said around 70 percent of Doha had been covered nearly two months ago, stressing that the company hopes to increase the coverage to reach a rate of 100 percent soon, and to establish a strong infrastructure in the State of Qatar in terms of information technology.
Vodafone Qatar managed to cover many areas in terms of fixed-line phones, including Lusail, West Bay, Al Sadd and Al Wakrah, adding that the company has delivered fixed-line services to about 30 areas within one year, which is considered an achievement for the company, he said.
