Palestinian armed groups fired a barrage of rockets into Israel on Sunday evening after Israeli soldiers earlier in the morning shot dead an Islamic Jihad militant who had planted a bomb near the border fence.
Sirens sounded in southern Israeli communities and the coastal city of Ashkelon.
The Israeli soldiers had used an army bulldozer to remove the militant’s body.
The militant Palestinian movement identified the dead man as Mohammad el-Na’em, 27, a member of the Islamic Jihad’s armed wing Saraya al-Quds. Islamic Jihad leader Ismail Radwan said, “The occupation (Israel) committed today an awful crime and this crime won’t pass easily.” An Israeli military statement said: “Troops spotted two terrorists approaching the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip and placing an explosive device adjacent to it. The troops opened fire towards them. A hit was identified.” Video footage filmed on mobile phones by Palestinian protesters in a field by the border showed the Israeli army bulldozer scooping up the dead body. Shots are heard and a second Palestinian appears hurt in the leg and can be seen running away limping.
An Israeli army spokeswoman clarified that the body of one of the two Palestinians shot was removed with the help of a bulldozer so that soldiers were not put in danger.
The army published its own video footage, showing two masked men placing an object at the border. It also published a photo showing the object was an explosive device.
Angry young men burned tyres after cutting the fence, according to eyewitnesses.
Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Bennett on army radio rejected accusations by Israeli peace activists that using a bulldozer to remove the body was “inhumane.” The radical Islamist Hamas movement ruling Gaza was inhumane for not returning the bodies of two soldiers killed in the 2014 Gaza war, he said on public radio.
