After a disastrous exit from the AFC Champions League, Al Rayyan have won three on the bounce and a win over Al Khor on Friday, will see them climb to top of the QNB Stars League ahead of current leaders Al Duhail.
The Lions are in the Amir Cup quarter-final and also beat Al Khor last weekend in the Ooredoo Cup albeit penalties.
Al Rayyan coach Diego Aguirre ahead of this wekeend’s match, said the eight-time league winners are not bothered by the results of other teams surrounding them or talks of a title race.
“I think our team is ready for this match. Focusing on the title race is very stressful and distracts players’ minds. Presently, all our focus is on the next game against Al Khor and the three points.
“I always tell the players to avoid thinking about the results of other teams. I say, ‘let us win the next game and then we think about the other opponents’,” the Uruguayan said.
On playing Al Khor, who have lost two of their last three, Aguirre said, “When I think about facing Al Khor, I know this match will be very difficult. The danger is not from the fact that Al Khor are in a difficult position, but from the level they show against us. I believe what is required is that we must be at the top of our level until we achieve the victory. I know that our players can be at their best.”
Al Knor on the other hand, need to start picking up points to put a gap between them and the bottom tow teams.
Coach Omar Naji said his side has to do more to correct their mistakes.
“We are doing a good job during our training sessions. But we pay the price for committing some mistakes. We hope we will not make it easy for our opponents and that we put up a good performance by achieving a positive result that will help improve the team’s position in the table.
“We know the importance of this game. We play against a strong team whose capabilities need not be talked about. They have many outstanding players. We have studied our opponents and we know their strengths and weaknesses,” said Omar.
Also on Friday, Qatar Sports Club take on Al Sailiya with both teams needing a positive result after a run of poor results in the last few weeks.
Al Sailiya have lost their last three league matches, while QSC have drawn four of their last five but boast the meanest defence in the league apart from the top two teams.
