Technology giant Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will invest 1.1 billion dollars in Mexico over the course of five years to drive the digital transformation of one of Latin America’s largest economies.
“Mexico is well positioned to harness the power of new technologies,” Microsoft’s regional head Cesar Cernuda said alongside Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. “It’s a huge opportunity to democratize society.” The investment plan includes a new cloud data centre to serve public institutions, businesses and citizens, as well as projects to improve young people’s digital skills and support environmental initiatives.
Lopez Obrador, who came to power just over a year ago, said Microsoft’s investment would aid technological development in both public and private institutions, and that it was a sign of trust in the country.
