Washington: The US Senate passed a bipartisan resolution on Thursday to curb President Donald Trump’s ability to take military action against Iran without congressional approval.
The move comes amid growing concern about an escalation with Iran, including last month’s assassination of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq and as lawmakers are more generally looking to claw back a bigger say in foreign policy.
Eight members of Trump’s Republican Party voted with the minority Democrats, with a final vote of 55-45. The resolution now moves to the House of Representatives, where its passage is all but assured.
Trump is likely to veto the measure, having derided curbs on the president’s war powers as a sign of “weakness.” The president recently used his veto on a War Powers Resolution on Yemen.
Congress has increasingly been looking to utilize the War Powers Act of 1973 to rein in the White House.
“The last thing we need is another aimless protracted conflict in the Middle East,” said Mike Lee, a Republican backing the bill. (DPA)
