QATAR Foundation Chairperson Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser attended QF’s National Sport Day celebrations on Tuesday which featured many sports activities catering to the young and old, differently-abled participants as well as different levels of athleticism.
The activities were also attended by QF Vice Chairperson and CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al Thani.
The day-long programme was held in four different venues across the sprawling Education City. It kicked off with a Cycling Around Education City activity starting from the Ceremonial Court led by Qatar Cyclists.
A key focus of this year’s activities was to offer a range of ability-friendly activities, with offerings ranging from football and goalball to chess.
Commenting on the occasion, QF Community Development President Machaille al Naimi said, “At QF, our aim is to effect positive change in society, and we believe this can be done through education, sharing knowledge and providing inclusive opportunities for everyone. This includes the chance to enjoy sport and physical activity, and to join together as a community in building a healthier, more active nation. Our National Sport Day celebrations reflect this commitment. Open to everyone, our activities aim to foster social engagement while showcasing the opportunities within Education City that people of all ages, cultures, backgrounds, abilities and interests can enjoy.”
“We are delighted to see how the community of Qatar has again got into the National Sport Day spirit at QF, and we hope that what they have experienced and enjoyed today will encourage them to make our activities and programmes that foster healthy, active lifestyles a regular part of their lives.”
Another highlight of the activities at the Ceremonial Court was the Torba Farmers Market, which featured over 50 stalls. The products on sale were mainly healthy food, including organic vegetables and vegan dishes. Also featured were items promoting sustainable lifestyle while breaking free from single-use plastic, such as bamboo toothbrush, mesh bags and wood dish brush. Furthermore, this year, the market featured a station where people were taught about the concept of reuse through cups and plates.
Activities such as football events, Zumba class, circuit class, chess competition and skills challenge were hosted at the Multaqa (Education City Student Centre), Oxygen Park and Green Spine.
Commenting on the importance of the having a day dedicated to sports, Ryan Moignard, senior ASD/special needs football specialist, said, “It helps promote a healthy lifestyle and using sports to make that happen especially as the country is hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022. It is a yearly event, which showcases that sports can be available for all. It is very rare to have the whole family and different parts of the community to come together. This is a massive achievement.”
Kathleen Bates, senior ASD/special needs aquatics specialist, stressed how the event provides the community with many options of sports that they can engage in. She added, “It seems it is getting bigger and bigger every year and people are talking about it. QF is also working hard to show that its facilities and campus are open to everybody and that they are welcome to get involved in its activities. I think Sport Day is a great showcase of that.”
Some of Qatar’s top names in sport also joined QF’s celebrations, including high-jumper Mutaz Barshim. He said, “I would like to extend my warmest greetings to Qatar Foundation for organising these activities today. I am glad to be here at Education City with many athletes and many members of the community who have come together to participate in different activities.”
Footballer Abdulkarim Hassan added, “I am pleased to participate in Qatar Foundation’s National Sport Day activities, to reaffirm that sport is important throughout the year and not just today. Every year, participation in sports activities is increasing across the community. This reflects the positive impact that the day is having on people.”
