Qatar and the UK are currently working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries concerning the 2022 FIFA World Cup that will provide a structure for the UK to support Qatar across all the areas, including security, defence and business cooperation.
This was disclosed by British Ambassador to Qatar HE Ajay Sharma on Sunday.
The British envoy said, “The aim of the MoU will be preparing a framework for the UK government and the private sector so that we can help Qatar in delivering a safe and a successful World Cup.”
On the occasion of the end of his tenure in Qatar, the British envoy said, “From my perspective, the last four years have been an extremely positive for the UK-Qatar relations. It (the bilateral relations) has been continuously progressing and improving, not only between the governments, but also people to people contacts, tourism and business.”
He said the UK’s priority towards Qatar is to support 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar National Vision 2030, and help ensure regional stability.
“What we have seen over the course of the last four years is a rediscovery of Qatar by the UK which have led to a real strengthening of the relationship in many areas,” he said.
“We have made it very clear that the UK wants Qatar to have a successful World Cup. We would work alongside the Qatari authorities to help deliver a safe and secure World Cup,” he said.
He said the two countries will also have a joint squadron – Qatari and British pilots – flying together as a unit as part of UK’s support for Qatar’s World Cup in 2022.
