Islamabad: Police in Pakistan have arrested an activist whose fierce criticism of the military’s alleged connection with Islamist militants brought thousands out to public rallies, in a rare challenge to the army’s dominance.
Manzoor Pashteen, leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), was whisked away by police from a house in the north-western city of Peshawar in a raid overnight, his family said on Monday.
Pashteen, a young villager from a remote Pakistani town on the Afghan border, rose to prominence after he founded PTM in 2018 and led massive public rallies. (DPA)
