THE popular Mexican folk dance troupe ‘Tierra Mestiza’ recently held a mesmerising performance at the Cultural Village Katara’s Amphitheatre as part of the 4th Cultural Diversity Festival.
The concert was held on the sidelines of the 6th Global Public Diplomacy Network General Assembly.
The dance group, including 13 dancers and one senior singer (Soledad Huerta), entertained the audience with music from four different regions of Mexico, namely Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, Sinaloa and Veracruz, perfectly in tune with the festival’s spirit of diversity.
The diversity got also reflected through the variety of colourful costumes used and the different ages of performers with the youngest one aged 15 and the oldest aged 55 years.
After two decades of hard work, Tierra Mestiza presented a rich, varied and profound interpretation of the Mexican folk dance. The combination of religious myths and scenes of everyday life as well as love and tragedy were transmitted to the audience through excellent choreography depicting a mosaic of Mexico’s cultural richness.
The Ambassador of Mexico HE Graciela G?mez Garc?a in her speech on the occasion highlighted the relevance of building bridges among cultures and described dance and music as an effective universal language that reaches the souls of people. The ambassador endorsed the efforts of Qatar to become a global hub for facilitating peaceful dialogue between civilisations.
In October 2000, Tierra Mestiza emerged in Tultitl?n, Mexico, as an independent group under the leadership of the current Director Carolina Ordaz Ortiz, having several years of artistic experience. The group has performed in festivals in 20 countries, in four continents. They are the first Mexican cultural group to come to Qatar. The group first visited Qatar in 2007.
Besides Mexico, 13 other countries are part of this festival’s edition including, Turkey, Portugal, Philippines, Hungary, Singapore, Poland, Korea, Taiwan, Swede, Mozambique, Nigeria and Lithuania. The cultural presentations will run throughout the year up to December.
