In a major step towards strengthening trade ties with Qatar in defence sector, India will be setting up its own pavilion for the first time in the history of Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition & Conference (Dimdex) at its upcoming edition in March this year.
Talking to Qatar Tribune, Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE P Kumaran said that a number of Indian firms related to defence industry will showcase their latest technologies to government entities and industry peers to form new trade partnerships.
Set to be bigger and more diverse than ever before, the seventh edition of Dimdex will take place from March 16 to 18 at the Qatar National Convention Center.
“Dimdex is known for bringing together the latest innovations and solutions under one roof. Dimdex has grown each year since its launch in 2008 and is now internationally recognised as a platform for businesses from the global defence industry to showcase their latest technologies,” he said.
Seeing its growing importance on the international level, the envoy said, India has decided to have its own pavilion for the first time in the history of Dimdex.
“We will occupy a good space and a number of Indian companies are expected to participate,” he said.
The envoy said that a big ship and senior-level defence officials from India will visit Qatar during Dimdex.
Dimdex has a proven track record of delivering commercial opportunities for members of the maritime defence and security community. In 2018, it attracted 13,000 visitors from 69 countries and witnessed the signing of more than 35 agreements, partnerships, and memorandums of understanding.
“We expect Indian firms to sign deals during Dimdex. Qatar is a very interesting market where products from all across the world are sold. Many Indian products have emerged as big brands in the international market. I am sure Indian exhibitors will get a very good response,” the envoy said.
Kumaran also revealed that Qatar’s Barzan Holdings, which is responsible for empowering the military capabilities of the Qatari Armed Forces, will take part in the 11th biennial edition of India’s DefExpo scheduled to be held in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh province.
Top officials from Qatari Armed Forces are expected to visit DefExpo that facilitates Business-to-Business (B2B) interaction with senior foreign delegations and also Government-to-Government (G2G) meetings and signing of memorandums of understanding.
Besides growing ties in defence sector, the envoy said that general trade between the two countries is also on a solid footing.
“Qatar will continue to hold a special position for India as far as our energy needs are concerned. India is looking to import more LNG from Qatar,” he said.
