London: The British government unveiled a new batch of 50-pence coins commemorating Brexit on Sunday, after the last one had to be scrapped when the date of Britain leaving the European Union was delayed.
“Leaving the European Union is a turning point in our history and this coin marks the beginning of this new chapter,” Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid said in an announcement.
According to Britain’s Press Association, the delay from October 31 to January 31 meant that the original batch of roughly 1 million coins was no longer accurate and had to be melted down. The new coin bears the inscription “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” and the Brexit date January 31. About 3 million of the coins will enter circulation across Britain starting on Friday, with a further 7 million to be added later in the year, PA reported.
Britain will leave the European Union at midnight (2300 GMT) on January 31. A transition period then kicks in, until at least December 31, 2020, to give London and Brussels time to negotiate their future relationship. (DPA)
