Al Sadd survived a late scare on Xavi Hernandez’s 40th birthday to beat Al Shahania 4-2 in their QNB Stars League match on Saturday.
The result sees Al Sadd remain in third place in the league standings with 27 points, but are a point shy of second-placed Al Rayyan and six points behind leaders Al Duhail.
Ahmed Akaichi gave Al Shahaniya the lead early on, sending in a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the fourth minute.
Hassan al Haydos in the ninth minute, turned in Akram Afif’s cross, thumping his effort past Ebrahim Mordou in goal for Shahaniya.
Both teams carved out half chances but Afif and Baghdad Bounedjah both wasted opportunities.
Four minutes into the second half, Al Sadd were gifted the lead when Saleh al Yeri deflected Ali Asad’s cross into his own net.
The Wolves kept prodding and were rewarded with a third from the penalty spot after Alvara Mejia handled Pedro Miguel’s cross in the box.
Afif coolly sent the the goalie the wrong way to extend the defending champions’ lead.
Al Shahania’s passing style caused Al Sadd some problems and they soon made it 3-2 in the 65th minute.
Akaichi again received the ball just outside the box before sending a low strike into the bottom corner past the outstretched Saad al Sheeb in goal. Al Sadd however, put the game to bed in stoppage time with Bounedjah dispatching a spot-kick, which had been awarded for a foul on Afif in the box.
Umm Salal beat Al Khor
Umm Salal managed only their second league win of the season and a first since September as Mahmoud al Mawas’ sixth minute strike secured a much-needed respite against Al Khor at the Al Gharafa Stadium on Saturday.
Even a change at the helm, Moroccan Aziz Ben Askar replacing Spaniard Raul Caneda, could not help Umm Salal make a turnaround in their fortunes.
But an entertaining encounter started in dramatic fashion when Umm Salal’s Walid Mesloub’s corner nearly found its way into the goal by a dramatically scorpion-kick finish by Al Mawas. Al Khor’s woes continued with back-to-back loses which leaves them in the danger zone alongside Al Shahania and Umm Salal.
