ARGENTINIAN street artist Martin Ron has painted the walls of streets in various cities across the globe, including Malaysia, Estonia, the US, the UK and all over his beloved city of Buenos Aires. On Friday, it was the turn of Doha to become home to his renowned avant-garde art following the unveiling of his mural in Katara Cultural Village.
Ron’s 11-metre tall mural painted on the wall of Katara’s Building 40 is titled ‘Oryx Goes Forward’. It is not only his first mural in Qatar, but also his first in the Middle East.
Just like his other masterpieces in different countries, Ron’s mural at Katara incorporates bold colours with layers of paints to create contrast and give the artwork its stunning 3D effect.
The mural shows a massive image of an Arabian oryx set against the famous Doha skyline, thus depicting the original environment of Qatar and the vibrancy of the country. The oryx is portrayed bursting through a wall, symbolising the rapid development being witnessed by the State despite challenges.
The unveiling of the first-
ever Qatar project of the talented Argentine was led by Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti together with Ambassador of Argentina to
Qatar HE Carlos Hernandez. The event was witnessed by many diplomats and art
connoisseurs. The mural caught the attention of the passers-by as well.
“I have travelled around the world and painted murals on various streets. This is my first time in Qatar and I noticed the vibrancy of Doha city. My first mural in Qatar is inspired by the strength of the Qatari people and the developments in the country”, Ron told the media on the sidelines of the event.
The high-scale artist, whose notable works include painting a wall of a 50-storey building, also said that his first project in Qatar took him around few days to complete.
He added that he was keen on working on more projects in the country.
Commenting on the occasion, Ambassador Hernandez said that he was proud to see the artistic imprint of Argentina on Qatar through Ross, who is considered one of the top ten muralists in the world. He added that the artist is likely to work on more projects across the country until FIFA World Cup 2022.
The envoy further said that under his leadership the Embassy of Argentina is keen on bringing more Argentinian artists to Qatar to contribute to the thriving art scene in the country. Similarly, he said, the embassy will continue to strengthen ties between Qatar and Argentina in key sectors such as investment and trade as well as in sports, education and culture, among others.
On the occasion, Katara General Manager Dr Sulaiti stressed that Katara will continue to invest in new buildings and projects to support the thriving art scene in Qatar.
