Defending champions Al Shamal Club held on to their leading position as shooting guard Aaron Mitchell and point guard George Tsintsadze combined for 46 points lifted them past Qatar Sports Club 88-82 during their 14th QBF League round match on Thursday.
At the Al Gharafa Club Indoor Hall, the holders faced a stiff and spirited resistance from Qatar Sports Club. Soon after QSC had a six-point lead in the third quarter (54-48) – their biggest in the game, a 10-point run provided Al Shamal vital push and a five-point advantage (63-58).
Guards Kevin Bracy and Jonathan Lee struck and put QSC one point ahead and then forward Mohamed Fakhirah responded to Al Shamal guard Aaron Mitchell’s layup with a brilliant trey to close out the quarter with a slender advantage for his team (69-67).
Al Shamal began exerting pressure right from the start of the fourth quarter and a downtown by guard Abdul Qadir Kosar put them ahead by a point. QSC regained the lead through centre Keanau Post’s layup (71-70). But a five-point run shook QSC and it later developed into a seven-point cushion, which became too hard for QSC to erase.
Mitchell had a game-high 25 points for Al Shamal. Tsintsadze added 21, while centre Omar Salem’s 17 had three treys and small forward Mikheil Berishvili collected 15. The 11th triumph in 14 games took Al Shamal to the top of the table with 25 points.
For QSC, Lee had the best effort of 22 points. Ahmed Abdalla earned 17. He was followed by Bracy (16), Fakhirah (14) and Post, who had 10 points and 16 rebounds. The ninth defeat in 14 matches kept QSC in the seventh spot with 18 points.
In another match, Al Arabi Club wore down Al Rayyan Club 81-72, shaking off the rivals with a nine-point closing lead. The game was up and down and in the final five minutes, Al Arabi managed to clinch their 11th victory from 13 games to take the second spot with 24 points.
With this loss, Al Rayyan now have 22 points from six defeats in 14 matches. Al Wakrah and Al Gharafa also have the same points but they have played one game less than Al Rayyan.
Miroslav Todic led the winners with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Mohammed Harat contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Khalid Suliman Abdi added 12 pts, Kevin Galloway also secured 12 and Khalid Abdelbaset managed 10.
