Al Gharafa Club recovered from an early assault by Al Ahli Club with their second quarter run of 16 points and coasted to an 89-72 victory in the QBF League at the home court on Wednesday.
Al Ahli looked determined and sharp in the early phase of their 13th-round game and opened an eight-point gap – their biggest of the match, and finished the session with a six-point advantage 20-14). They continued to press through forward Mohammed Ouiri and guard Jeffery Newberry even in the second quarter.
A three-pointer from Ouiri handed a seven-point lead to Al Ahli with only two minutes and 56 seconds gone. But at this stage, forward Aaron Nelson launched a bright 16-point sequence which virtually took the fight out of the rivals and placed them nine points clear (36-27) just before the interval.
Later, guards Abdulrahman Saad, Theron Bussey and forward Sammy Monroe collected points and enabled Al Gharafa to beef up the lead. The winners stretched it to even 30 points before wrapping up their ninth victory in 13 games and progressing to second spot in the table with 22 points behind leaders Al Shamal (23 points from 10 wins in 13 matches).
Al Arabi (22 points from 10 wins in 12 matches) and Al Wakrah, who outlasted Al Khor 74-68 in their 13th match tonight, have also secured 22 points. Al Rayyan are fifth with 21 points after eight wins in 13 matches.
Nelson emerged the leading scorer with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Saad added 27, while Bussey got 15 and Monroe mustered 13 for Al Gharafa.
For Al Ahli, Newberry had the maximum 24 points, along with 10 assists. Forward Ouiri notched up 16, while centre Aaron Rountree posted eight points and 11 rebounds.
In the second match, in which no teams could shake off each other, Al Wakrah had to battle hard to subdue Al Khor. It was a low-scoring third quarter which proved decisive and helped the winners get a 16-9 edge on way to the victory.
Musa Muhajareen Abdul Aleem performed well and collected 24 points for Al Wakrah. Oumar Seck (18 points and 15 rebounds) and Julius Coles (18 points and 11 rebounds) had a double-double each. Erfan Ali Saeed added 11 points.
For lowly Al Khor, Madrious Gibbs had a game-high 25 points. Khobi Williamson came up with a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Malcolm Bernard collected 15 points.ResultsAl Gharafa Club beat Al Ahli Club 89-72 (half-time 36-29)
