The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) on Tuesday awarded 10 new contracts worth QR4 billion to Qatari companies for developing infrastructure in 10 citizens’ sub-divisions in different parts of the country.
The building of infrastructure is aimed at serving more than 8,400 land plots in 10 sub-divisions, including 6,800 plots in seven existing and 1,600 plots in three new sub-divisions for citizens in the country.
Ashghal President Dr Eng Saad bin Ahmad al Muhannadi signed the contracts with the representatives of Qatari companies in the presence of a number of Central Municipal Council (CMC) members.
Qatari companies that got the contracts included Petroserv and Roadbridge JV, QBS Constructions, UrbaCon and InfraRoad Trading & Contracting JV, Iris Trading and Contracting Company and Al Darwish Engineering Company.
As per the agreements, infrastructure development like roads, sewage and drainage networks, pedestrian and cyclist lanes, parking bays and treated sewage effluent (TSE) networks will take place in 10 areas including Al Ebb and Leabaib, Jeryan Nejaima, south of Al Duhail, Umm Lekhba, Al Mearad, Al Meshaf south and others.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the agreement-signing ceremony, Muhannadi said, “The signing of all these contracts is based on the directives of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani to give top priority to developing infrastructure in citizens’ sub-divisions.”
“Work on these projects will commence during the first quarter of 2020 and will be completed within four years. Infrastructure including a total of 223 km of roads, 325 km of pedestrian and bicycle paths, more than 20,000 parking lots, about 192 km of sewage networks, 305 km of stormwater and groundwater drainage networks, and 142 km of TSE networks will be ready upon completion.”
Muhannadi said, “Awarding of these contracts is the first step in Ashghal’s plan for 2020 to develop the citizens’ sub-divisions throughout the country. More projects will be awarded to cover additional areas in the country.”
“We are pleased that all 10 contracts have been awarded to Qatari companies and we are confident that the Qatari contractor is able to implement these projects,” he said.
He pointed out that the authority implemented new initiatives in coordination with contractors that would accelerate the pace of implementation and deliver projects on time and reducing inconvenience in residential areas.
Commenting on awarding of contracts to local firms, QBS Construction Chairman Sheikh Ali bin Hamad al Thani said, “Ashghal always encourages Qatari companies to implement development projects for the benefit of the country and its citizens. Qatari companies have greater knowledge regarding the conditions of the country and the differences in the areas, so they are able to implement the projects better.”
CMC Vice-President Mohammed bin Hamad al Attan said, “The new projects to develop the infrastructure are very important for citizens who will be residing in those areas.”
Providing details about the overall work being implemented to develop citizens’ sub-divisions in the country, Ashghal Roads Projects Department Manager Saoud al Tamimi, said Ashghal is working on completing 22 infrastructure projects for citizens’ sub-divisions at a total cost of QR9.5 billion. These projects will cover approximately 20,728 residential plots in 11 areas.
