Beijing: Former Interpol chief Meng Hongwei, whose apparent disappearance in China in late 2018 attracted worldwide attention, has been sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison for corruption by a Chinese court.
Meng has also been fined 2 million yuan (about 290,000 dollars), the First Intermediate People’s Court of Tianjin said.
The court said between 2005 and 2017, while serving in various positions including as vice minister of public security and director of the China Maritime Police Bureau, Meng used his position to obtain illegal benefits for others. The court said Meng accepted bribes worth more than 14.5 million yuan (around $2.1 million). (DPA)
