THE first Person Centered Care (PCC) ambassadors have started volunteering in Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) facilities, supporting clinical teams in providing the highest quality care to patients and visitors.
The volunteers, who come from various professional backgrounds and have a variety of skills and expertise, have completed HMC’s prerequisite training courses for the PCC programme, including Infection Control, Fire Safety and Compassionate Human Interactions. They can be distinctly identified with their PCC Ambassador vests and HMC Volunteer ID as they work across five HMC sites: Ambulatory Care Center, Communicable Disease Center, Enaya Specialized Care Center, National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR) and Qatar Rehabilitation Institute.
HMC’s Nesma’ak Customer Service team is supporting the PCC programme by supervising the ambassadors in their respective facility assignments as they perform a number of tasks, including meeting and greeting patients, providing general support and information, i.e. assisting staff at Information Desks, way-finding and guiding patients to their appointments.
The Center for Patient Experience and Staff Engagement (CPESE) developed the Person Centered Care (PCC) Ambassadors Volunteer Programme to provide assistance and support to patients and their family members at HMC. The programme, which enables members of the community to volunteer to support the delivery of patient care, was launched late last year during Qatar’s first Patient Experience Forum.
“The programme is founded on the principles of partnership, compassion and quality, where patients, family members, healthcare professionals and PCC ambassadors form a partnership that improves the overall patient experience at HMC”, said Nasser al Naimi, deputy chief of quality, Center for Patient Experience and Staff Engagement and director, Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute.
“Our PCC ambassadors will enhance the organisation’s ability to provide a positive patient experience and strengthen the culture of person centredcare. The PCC ambassadors will also cultivate the existing culture of volunteerism across Qatar. We urge anyone over the age of 30 living in Qatar – residents and citizens – to consider becoming one of our PCC ambassadors. It’s a truly rewarding experience”, added Naimi.
A future phase of the PCC Ambassadors Volunteer Programme will see volunteers supporting patients in specific activities related to each ambassador’s own experience and skills, such as reading with patients, teaching yoga sessions, physical fitness, stretching, and many other recreational activities.
