Qatar’s industrial production in December declined 2.5 percent from November, mostly due to a fall in the mining output, which includes oil and gas production.
According to the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA), the key Industrial Production Index stood at 101.4 points in December, down 3.8 percent from a year ago.
The mining component of the index, which has a relative weightage of 83.6 percent, showed a decline of 2 percent month-on-month and 3.8 percent year- on- year.
The M-o-M fall in mining output was driven by decreased productions of crude oil and natural gas, by 2.1 percent. Production under the “other mining and quarrying” group also showed a month-on-month decline of 0.3 percent.
Qatar’s manufacturing output — which has a relative weightage of 15.2 percent in the index — also decreased in December, showing a 2.9 percent fall from November. PSA attributed this fall in the productions of cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 4.3 percent,
chemicals and chemical products by 4 percent, refined petroleum products by 2.7 percent and beverages by 1.3 percent.
However, productions in three groups went up — rubber and plastics products by 2.1 percent, basic metals by 1.9 percent and food products by 1.5 percent. No change was noticed in the productions of printing and reproduction of recorded media M-o-M.
The manufacturing component of the IPI in December showed a 2.5-percent decline when compared with that in the same month last year.
The fall was driven mainly driven by decreased productions of cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 8.5 percent, refined petroleum products by 6.2 percent, chemicals and chemical products by 5.2 percent and food products by 2.4 percent.
However, production in four groups showed jump year-on-year — basic metals by 20.2 percent, beverages by 8.6 percent, printing and reproduction of recorded media by 0.4 percent and rubber and plastics products by 0.2 percent.
Electricity output — which accounts for 0.7 percent of IPI — declined 35 percent in December month-on-month and fell 21 percent year-on-year.
Similarly, water production (desalination), which carries a weightage of 0.5 percent, showed an increase of 5.6 percent month-on-month and 1 percent year-on-year.
