ITALY’S new Ambassador to Qatar HE Alessandro Prunas was all praise for the vibrant cultural life in Doha and the important role the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) plays as a landmark cultural hub in the country.
The ambassador was speaking at the opening of the Magnificent Cultures exhibition in Building 18 Gallery 2 at Katara on Saturday.
The art event featuring the works of Italian artist Luigi Ballarin is the first public event hosted by the envoy who only recently assumed the role as the head of Italian diplomatic mission in Qatar.
“This is my very first exhibition opening. I have only been here for 10 days, but I think this is a very good way to start my mission in this country. I realised how the city has an incredibly vibrant cultural life and how the Cultural Village is important not just in the city of Doha. I think it is a landmark and a very inspirational asset for the country,” said Ambassador Prunas.
Magnificent Cultures Exhibition is organised by the Embassy of Italy in Doha and the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara in cooperation with the Italian Gallery Medina. It is curated by BesteGürsu International Art Consultancy.
The envoy also praised the collection of Ballarin, a native of Venice residing and working in Istanbul. He explained how the artist reflected his roots and the Islamic world through his collection on show for the first time in Qatar.
Commenting on his first solo exhibition in Qatar, Ballarin said, “I live between Venice, Rome and Istanbul. All these cities have brought prestige to our histories. I hope this exhibition will be appreciated by the Qatari people and hope that this event will be the beginning of a dialogue in Qatar and throughout the Middle East.”
The collection features 34 paintings that capture the introspective vision of the artist on the Islamic world by presenting cultural symbols, architectural elements, fascinating landscapes and characters expressed through an abstract artistic language, enriched by bright and vibrant colours.
Exhibition curator Gursu underlined the effort and heart of Luigi towards his art.
She also emphasised the intercultural dialogues mirrored in the art event featuring an Italian artist, Turkish curator and Qatar as the venue.
“Ballarin constructs bridges between the East and the West in his first solo exhibition in Qatar, Magnificent Cultures. He presents the bridges and he preserves the mystery of cultures,” Gursu said.
