Baghdad: Iraq’s most influential cleric, Ali al-Sistani, on Thursday underwent successful surgery on a broken thigh bone, an Iraqi medical source said. Al-Sistani, who is 89 and rarely seen in public, wields clout in Iraq and his views are closely followed by the country’s politicians.
A team of Iraqi surgeons performed the operation on al-Sistani in Iraq’s southern province of Najaf, the source said. “He left the operating room a while ago. The operation was successful,” the source added without details. (DPA)
