The 4th Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine Conference (Q-PEM) 2020, hosted by Sidra Medicine in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), concluded in Doha amid praise and appreciation from partners and attendees.
The conference witnessed the participation of more than 400 healthcare professionals from across the world including physicians, nurses, paramedics and emergency medical technicians, allied health practitioners, and pharmacists.
The conference, which aims to provide a high-quality, evidence-based update for everyone in the emergency sector and urgent care for children, covered key topics including resuscitation care, trauma management, quality and patient safety, sepsis care, toxicology, neonatal emergencies and others.
Key highlights from this year’s Q-PEM included interactive sessions related to disaster management; nurses beyond bedside; and drug abuse testing. Sidra Medicine’s flagship Qatar Poison Center, the country’s first dedicated toxicology and poison helpline, also covered challenging cases as a knowledge sharing exercise.
Delegates at Q-PEM participated in a variety of sessions discussing the latest research studies and patient experience within an emergency department setting. Others took part in the pre-conference workshops that tackled Paediatric Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), Paediatric Procedural Sedation Programmes, and Emergency Management of Paediatric Airway.
Prof Khaled al Ansari, chair of Emergency Medicine at Sidra Medicine, said, “Sidra Medicine is an active voice in global healthcare discussions, ensuring that field professionals are constantly refining their practice and ultimately contributing to better patient care. Thanks to our affiliation with Qatar Foundation, platforms like Q-PEM allow us to jointly address, with local and international peers, partners and thought leaders, specific topics that would guarantee every child gets the adequate care and support whenever and wherever they need it.”
“I am very happy with the turnout the conference witnessed. I would like to thank our international speakers, our key partners including Hamad Medical Corporation for their support and everyone who helped us bring so much value to pediatric emergency medicine through this conference,” Prof Ansari added.
Dr Mohamed al Amri, director of HMC’s Paediatrics Emergency Centres, noted that the conference, now in its fourth year, is yet another example of how the two organisations are working together to advance and strengthen pediatric healthcare in the country.
He said, “Q-PEM focused on many of the challenges facing paediatric and emergency physicians and other healthcare professionals involved in the clinical care for children. The conference emphasised the practical application of evidence-based topics and provided an important platform for attendees to increase their knowledge and enhance their competence by bringing new skills to the diagnosis and management of paediatric disorders.”
