DOHA THE International Family Institute (DIFI) has highlighted the effects different parenting styles have on the academic achievements of children, at the ‘Third International Conference on Family, Schooling and Education in the Arab World: Horizons’, as part of the MDG 2030 Agenda.
The conference was organised by the University of Abu Shoaib Doukkali in Morocco and aimed to provide an in-depth look into the role a family plays in the education of the child.
DIFI, a member of Qatar Foundation, was represented by Dr Azza Abdelmoneium, director of Research. “A family faces many challenges in education due to globalisation and social media, which influence the education of our children,” said Dr Abdelmoneium.
“The findings of our research reveal that family has an important role to play in education and parenting styles impact a child’s academic achievements. Family is responsible for a child’s education and must ensure the best education for their children.”
The symposium discussed several themes such as evaluating and developing national policies and strategies related to family and education, and developing them in light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Other topics included highlighting the experiences of Arab countries in the field of family and education promotion; Arab and international agreements on the family and education, and their compatibility with the 2030 development goals; and education and the media in strengthening the roles played by the family in relation to education.
Dr Sharifa Noaman al Emadi, executive director of DIFI, said: “We’re delighted to be part of this forum. At DIFI, we believe that sustainable development begins with the family. It is our top priority and we consider it the cornerstone of education, health and equality. It is an integral unit of the society and is essential for the development of strategies and policies at national and regional levels.”
