Kinshasa: At least 30 people have died following a landslide at a gold mine in north-eastern Congo, authorities said on Sunday.
Provincial mining minister Dieudonne Apasa told dpa that 30 bodies had been recovered from the rubble so far, and that the death toll was likely to rise.
“It is not yet known how many miners were in the mine,” he said, adding that they were about 17 metres underground when the “earth collided with them.” The accident occurred on Friday at the Ndiyo artisanal gold mine in Watsa in the Haut-Uele province, near the border with Uganda. (DPA)
