Al Lusail lived up to his top billing and bagged the sixth straight race, taking home the Halul Island Cup, the feature event on the first day of the two-day Qatar National Day celebration week.
At the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club Racecourse in New Al Rayyn, the five-year-old bay horse from Al Jeryan Stud, ridden by Ronan Thomas, edged Abu Samrah, with Harry Bentley astride, by half a length to win the 2,400m race.
While the result enabled trainer Hadi al Ramzani to wrap up a double, it denied Khalifa bin Sheail and trainer Jassim Ghazali a treble. Salman Bu Thaila, ridden by Luca Maniezzi, was third by one and a quarter lengths. Shaman Bu Thaila (Eduardo Pedroza) finished fourth by nose, while Abha, another Ramzani trainee, rounded out the top five.
This was the third successive winner of the season for Al Lusail, who has been unbeaten in the past six races, which lifted his tally to 10 in 20 races.
Festive (Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari) and Al Naama (Al Shaqab Racing) shared the other two big races of the day. Ridden by Bentley, Festive held off Amenable, under Maniezzi, by a short head to win the Thoroughbred for Fillies and Mares (Class 2) 2,000m. The Ghazali ward and Qatar Cup winner posted the second successive win in three races in the season.
Qatar Dance was third by over three lengths and was followed by Regality and Hillside Dream in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Soufiane Saadi pushed Qatar International Cup (Group 1 PA) runner-up Al Naama, an Alban de Mieulle trainee, to beat Dabbab by a head to emerge the winner in the Purebred Arabian Conditions 1,850m. This was the second race of the season for the five-year-old grey mare. Prince Amer was third by four lengths, failing the match the pace of the two front-runners. Evolution Du Croate and Brama De Pompadour were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Daneyan handed trainer Jassim Ghazali the second winner of the day, pulling off the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 3 2,200m race by three quarters. Ridden by Marco Casamento, the four-year-old grey colt also had the sweet taste of his first win in four races in the season when he beat Perfect Storm by three quarters of a length. Saint Roch was third by neck in a tight finish.
Admiral, under Eduardo Pedroza, and AJS Al Moheeb, ridden by Harry Bentley, added to the thrills. While Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim al Thani-owned five years old bay horse Admiral beat Qate’e by less than a length to win the Local Thoroughbred Handicap dash over 1,200m, AJS Al Moheeb, owned by Mohammed al Attiya and trained by Jassim Ghazali, ended his victory wait.
Admiral has been in a strong form this season and posted his fourth triumph in succession in five races this season. Sarat Abha (Tomas Lukasek) was third by two lengths.
AJS Al Moheeb was second in four races last month. But with Harry Bentley on the back, the six-year-old grey horse managed to hold off Sealine by a head to post his overall third win in 21 races.
Earlier, Tomas Lukasek nailed a superb hat-trick of wins, claiming the first three races. First, he took home Ali Yousuf al Kubaisi’s four-year-old bay colt Suprematism home by over a length against Geno in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4 2,000m race (Div 1). This was his first victory in four races in the season.
Then El Patron and Lukasek outran Ras Mlaejy by one length and three quarters in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4 2,00m (Div 2). This was also season’s first triumph for the four-year-old bay colt, owned by Khalifa Mohammed al Attiyah. Both the top two finishers were trained by Hossin Mohammad Ashour.
Lukasek then completed his fine treble when he guided the HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Thani-owned Neearah to the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate title. The four-year-old colt has had five races in two seasons without win this season but wasn’t to be denied this time around. He beat Djamil, ridden by Ronan Thomas, by three quarters of a length in 1,600m race, while Mourad was third by over a length.
Soufiane Saadi and Ronan Thomas ended Lukasek’s dazzling run when the former set up a two-and-a-half-length triumph for Ellianka, owned by Mohanad Jassim al Yaqout, in the Purebred Arabian Claiming Race 1,200m.
With Ronan Thomas astride, Wadha tried hard but could not stop the five-year-old bay mare, a trainee of Hadi al Ramzani, from winning first time in four races this season. D Jumana, with Lukasek holding reins, was third by a length.
