Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani witnessed the signing of ‘Project Qatar Mobility’ agreement between Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and Volkswagen in Doha on Saturday.
The agreement, which was signed on the sideline of Doha Forum, is aimed at introducing for the first time a cutting-edge fleet of self-driving level 4 electric shuttles during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar will thus be the venue for the world’s first emission-free, electric and autonomous public transport system.
The agreement was signed by QIA CEO Mansoor al Mahmoud and Volkswagen Chairman Herbert Diess.
As many as 35 autonomous, electric ID. BUZZ AD from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will shuttle up to four passengers in West Bay area on semi-fixed routes, while 10 hi-tech Scania buses will pick up larger groups. Fostering a cross-brand collaboration as blueprint for future Autonomous Driving solutions, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania, MOIA and AID-Autonomous Intelligent Driving will play an important role in this project.
