Ethiopians from all walks of life, young and old gathered to celebrate ‘Ethiopian Day in Qatar’ at the Al Gharafa Stadium on November 29. The colourful event which brought together Ethiopian expatriates and their friends from various country featured a number of fun-filled activities.
The event was organised by the The Ethiopian Embassy and Ethiopian Community Association in Qatar and showcased a number of sport activities, traditional and modern Ethiopian music and dance, food, among others.
During the event, display of the Ethiopian culture was at its best. A majority of the people at the event were dressed in attires that depicted the country’s cultural heritage. Popular Ethiopian coffee was also served.
Renowned Ethiopian artistes enthralled the crowd with popular songs during the event.
The event was attended by Ethiopian Ambassador to Qatar, HE Samia Zekaria, embassy staff, leaders of Ethiopian Community Association in Qatar as well as visitors from neighbouring countries of Ethiopia. Ethiopian Airlines officials were also present at the event.
The theme of this year’s event was “Ethiopian Day for the establishment of our children’s school” which aimed at garnering public support to the Ethiopian Community School in Doha. It is worth noting that the preparations to establish an Ethiopian Community School in Doha are under way and the school is scheduled to be in operation in the next academic year.
Speaking at the event, the ambassador said, “This year’s event has brought us a unique historical opportunity in which we can put our footprint in installing the school that can address the concerns of many Ethiopian households and helps children learn their own languages and develop their culture.”
Zekaria further said, “This school is a big national monument which will become operational in 2020/21 academic year and I am banking on your support.”
She also expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the government of Qatar and particularly to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, for ‘his gracious gift of a school premise last year’.
Talking at the event, Chairman of the Ethiopian Community Association in Qatar Kumlachew Ketsela stressed on the importance of Ethiopian Day event in bringing Ethiopians together and raising their contribution to their country. He also mentioned that “this year’s edition particularly aimed at mobilising huge public support to the school- an asset for the next generations.”
The annual event is aimed at promoting Ethiopian culture in Qatar, while bringing a sense of togetherness among Ethiopian expatriates.
Currently, there are over 20,000 Ethiopians living and working in Qatar.
