Vatican City: Pope Francis on Sunday promoted Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, a man tipped as one of his possible successors, to a key position within the Vatican administration.
Tagle was appointed head of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, the Vatican’s department for missionary work, also known by its old Latin name of Propaganda Fide.
He is to replace Italian Cardinal Ferdinando Filoni, who was named Grand Master of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a Vatican statement said.
The appointment means that Tagle, 62, will have to move to Rome and leave his position as Archbishop of Manila, which he has held since 2011. (DPA)
