Kampala/Kinshasa: At least 11 people were killed by floods in western Uganda, while another 10 people were killed by torrential rains in neighbouring Congo, authorities said on Saturday.
The deaths in Uganda occurred when heavy rains flooded several villages near the town of Bundibugyo on the foothills of the Ruenzori mountains, national Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakaweesi told DPA.
Ten bodies were recovered on Saturday after torrential rains hit the Congolese town of Mbanza-Ngungu, municipal administrator Luc Mukiadi said. The rains also destroyed substantial amounts of infrastructure in the town, Mukiadi said.
Rescue operations continued on Saturday afternoon in the search of more bodies, the administrator added.
Many countries in East and Central Africa have been hit by “unusually heavy rainfall and flooding,” according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. (DPA)
