Dhaka: Bangladesh has launched a crackdown against hundreds of soot-belching brick kilns to reduce smog in its capital Dhaka, one of the most polluted cities in the world in terms of air quality.
“We have either dismantled or shut at least 40 brick kilns in the last seven days,” Abdullah Al Mamun, an official at the department of environment, told DPA on Thursday.
The drive against the polluters will continue until the situation improves, he said without giving a specific number of kilns targeted to be shut down. Brick kilns are a major source of air pollution in Dhaka alongside vehicular emissions and construction projects in the mega city. (DPA)
