UCL Qatar students have recently returned from two international trips, exploring the cultural institutions of Amsterdam and Ankara as part of their respective Master’s Degrees in Arts (MA) programmes.
Each year, UCL Qatar students across both the MA in Museum and Gallery Practice and the MA in Library and Information Studies programmes have had the opportunity to travel abroad and compare the theories learnt on the Education City campus to real-life practical examples.
The Museum and Gallery Practice MA students, who travelled to Amsterdam visited 12 museums, including the renowned Van Gogh Museum, Rijks Museum and Stedelijik Museum. There, students explored the different curricula, exhibitions and programmes of each museum.
They were also able to delve into the city’s arts and culture scene through special tours as well as interact with different museum directors, representatives and the local community.
The Amsterdam trip was led by Dr Alexandra Bounia, senior lecturer in Museum Studies at UCL Qatar.
Bounia said, “Each year, I have had the pleasure of accompanying students to countries rich in history, culture and heritage to explore museums that are at the forefront of innovation in terms of their museological approaches. Each trip has had its own memories and we, as an institution, are always excited to witness the impact that these trips have on our current students and graduates.”
Anusheh Zaman, a student in the Museums and Gallery Practice MA, said it was impressive to see how the museums were trying to fill the gaps between their vision and ideas, by understanding what the audience and visitors want.
She also mentioned that this concept will be implemented in the students’ exhibition taking place next year as part of her academic programme requirements.
The Library and Information Studies MA students who travelled to Ankara visited the country’s top educational institutions, including Ankara University and Bilkent University.
At Ankara University, students attended a seminar on Research Data Management and Digitalisation of Cultural Heritage. They also visited some of the biggest libraries in Turkey and learned about the evolving library sector in the country.
The trip to Ankara was led by Dr Fred Nesta, senior lecturer in Library and Information Studies
Nesta said, “We have seen our students grow professionally when they see what they learnt in the classroom being applied in practice in international contexts. After such experiences, they come back to campus with an expanded understanding and apply what they have learned to their studies and professional careers here in Qatar and in their home countries.
“We have seen with our eyes how these trips can contribute to the growth of the information and knowledge management sector in the country, and I am honoured to be part of this growth.”
Boluwatife Agbelusi, a student in the Library and Information Studies MA, said: “Going to Ankara was definitely an experience worth taking. What I found most interesting in this trip is how libraries are fast evolving - I found it jaw - dropping that you can borrow a book from any public library in the nation and return it to any branch near you. Thanks to UCL Qatar for this memorable experience, I found it very insightful.”
