Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center (QTTSC) at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG), in collaboration with the International Road Federation, recently organised a training workshop on Road Traffic Safety Management. This came as part of the continuous efforts to implement the National Traffic Safety Action Plan (2018-2022).
The workshop aimed to provide information on the elements of the Road Traffic Safety Management (RTSM) system, including institutional management, interventions and the results.
The workshop addressed the requirements of ISO39001 standards and discussed the impact of RTSM on business and operational performance.
The course discussed the institutional management process related to road traffic safety management. The procedure to perform road safety management capacity review was presented with practical examples and group exercises.
The management of fleet safety programmes and the application of different tools to support road safety management related processes were also addressed.
More than 35 participants from the National Traffic Safety Committee, senior engineers from General Directorate of Traffic, Ministry of Municipality and Environment, as well as from many engineering companies and contractors participated in the workshop.
Susanna Zammataro, director-general of the International Road Federation, and Martin Heath, technical director of RTSM Global Limited and member of the ISO 39001 British Standards Working Group RTS/1, led the workshop.
Khatib & Alami Engineering Consultation Company co-sponsored the event as part of their commitment to support the efforts for improving traffic safety in Qatar.
Commenting on the workshop, QTTSC Director Prof Faris Tarlochan said, “Road Traffic Safety is one of the important challenges that are facing the local and international community, thus QTTSC is working actively to contribute in improving the traffic safety status in collaboration with local authorities and international partners. This workshop is one in a number of forums that aim to raise public awareness and responsibility in road safety.”
QTTSC workshop coordinator Assistant Professor Dr Wael Alhajyaseen said having an effective Road Traffic Safety management system in the institutional level is essential to ensure sustainable improvement in road safety levels through the continuous reduction in road fatalities and severe injuries. ISO 39001 can significantly help institutions or organizations to have in place a comprehensive management system of road safety interventions.
