Chairperson of the Doha Film Institute HE Sheikha al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani and Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani attended the Made in Qatar opening red carpet event at Katara Cultural Village on Tuesday night, alongside 23 aspiring filmmakers in competition this year.
Made in Qatar, presented by Ooredoo, as part of the Ajyal Festival, serves as a platform for home-grown talents to showcase their work on a global stage.
Some of the chosen shorts were shot internationally, attesting to the potential role Qatar can play in shaping the global narrative and giving volume to important new voices.
The opening night screenings included: Ahmad al Sharif’s End of the Road (2019), Tick Tock (2019) by Awad Karrar, The Artist: Yacoub Missi (2019) by Tony El Ghazal, In the Middle (2019) by Mariam al Dubhani, Falling Leaves (2019) by Dimitri Yuri, Refuge (2019) by Maha Essid, F-57 (2018) by Abdulanaser Hassan al Yafei, Socotra – The Invisible Island (2019) by Ching Siew Hua, The Black Veil (2019) by AJ al Thani and Fragile (2019) by Kholood al Ali.
The Made in Qatar jury involved Sudanese filmmaker Amjad Abu Alala, British actor Kris Hitchen and Qatari architect and urbanist Fatma al Sahlawi.
