QATAR is going to set a new benchmark in the way the preparations for a mega global sporting event like the Fifa World Cup are done, Bryan K Barnett, mayor of Rochester Hills and 77th president of the United States Conference of Mayors, said on Tuesday.
Barnett, who is leading a delegation of seven mayors from different US cities to Doha, said the way Qatar is executing all projects related to 2022 FIFA World Cup, “is unprecedented”.
“Many countries have organised mega sporting events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics, but the way Qatar is marching ahead with its preparations is extraordinary. Qatar’s early planning and detailed preparations to host a safe and secure FIFA World Cup will set a precedent for future mega events,” Barnett told Qatar Tribune.
With less than three years left for the tournament, he said, all the members of the delegation are highly impressed with the various developments taking place on all fronts for the success of the tournament.
Praising Qatar for its resilience in the face of the ongoing economic blockade, Barnett said, “I visited Qatar in 2017 soon after the blockade was imposed. At that time there were some concerns about it. Now, when I am visiting Qatar in 2019, I don’t see any of those concerns. Qatar has moved ahead. We are quite hopeful that Qatar will deliver the most amazing FIFA World Cup the globe has ever seen.”
Stressing the importance of US-Qatar relations, especially in defence and security co-operation, he said the two countries have taken many initiatives to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
Over the past years, he said, US companies have increased their investments in various sectors of Qatar including infrastructure, transportation, sports facilities, healthcare, technology, tourism and energy development.
“The main purpose of our visit to Doha this time is to further strengthen US-Qatar partnership in economic and cultural sectors,” he said, adding that education is another sector that holds a lot of potential for cooperation between the two countries.
“The US has good presence in Qatar’s education, both at school and university levels. We are in talks to further improve the cooperation,” he said.
Besides Barnett, the other six members of the US delegation included City of Findlay Mayor Christina M Muryn, Orion Charter Township Supervisor Chris Barnett, City of Tacoma Mayor Victoria R Woodards, Mayor of Columbus Andrew Ginther, Mayor of Plano Harry La Rosiliere, and Mayor of Orlando Buddy Dyer.
During an interaction with the local media, City of Findlay Mayor Christina M Muryn said he was highly impressed with the all-round development taking place in Qatar.
“There are opportunities galore for US companies in Qatar. We have already met with a number of Qatari dignitaries including ministers, business leaders and top officials of various local entities. I was quite impressed with their vision for the country,” Muryn said.
City of Tacoma Mayor Victoria R Woodards said, “This is my first visit to Qatar, the host country of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. I am quite amazed with the kind of investment that has been made by the Qatari government for the mega tournament. I am also highly impressed with the way people of this country are treated by the government.”
Terming Qatar as a land of opportunities in the Middle East region, Mayor of Orlando Buddy Dyer said, “We were briefed about the various initiatives taken by Qatari government to attract foreign investment. The country has also taken a lot of steps to improve the condition of migrant workers. All these factors make Qatar an ideal place for investment.”
Hailing the high-level of services provided by Qatar Airways to its customers, he said, “It’s truly the best airline of the world. The kind of hospitality we received from the airlines staff, was truly amazing. Qataris in general are very welcoming.”
