The PSA index details the growth of various industrial sectors in economy such as “mining”, “manufacturing”, “electricity production”, and “water production and desalination”.
It is a short-term quantitative index that measures the changes in the volume of productions of a selected basket of industrial products over a given period with respect to that in a chosen period called the base period.
The IPI consists of three main components: “mining” with a relative weightage of 83.6 percent, “manufacturing” 15.2 percent, “electricity” 0.7 percent, and finally “water” with a relative importance of 0.5 percent.
The index of the mining sector showed a decrease by 0.6 percent compared to the previous month (August 2019), as a result of the decrease in the quantities of “crude oil and natural gas” by 0.6 percent , while “other mining and quarrying” showed an increase by 2.0 percent.
When compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (September 2018), the IPI of mining increased by 1.1 percent.
The index of the manufacturing sector showed a decrease by 2.6 percent compared to the previous month (August 2019).
The decrease was seen in the following groups: “manufacture of chemicals and chemical products” by 4.3 percent, followed by “manufacture of rubber and plastics products” by 1.5 percent, and “manufacture of refined petroleum products” by 0.7 percent.
However, an increase was recorded in four groups: “manufacture of food products” by 2.3 percent, “manufacture of beverages” 2.2 percent, “manufacture of cement and other non-metallic mineral products” 2.1 percent, and “manufacture of basic metals” 1.9 percent. No changes were noticed in “printing and reproduction of recorded media”.
On the other hand, in terms of annual change, comparing to September 2018, an increase of 1.7 percent was recorded, affected by the following groups: “manufacture of basic metals” by 22.8 percent, “manufacture of rubber and plastics products” by 1.9 percent, and “printing and reproduction of recorded media” by 0.7 percent.
However, a decrease was recorded in “manufacture of cement & other non-metallic mineral products” by 1.3 percent, “manufacture of beverages” 1 percent, “manufacture of chemicals and chemical products” 0.9 percent, “manufacture of food products” 0.8 percent, and “manufacture of refined petroleum products” by 0.5 percent.
A m-o-m decrease of 7 percent and a y-o-y decrease of 8.6 percent was noticed in the production of “electricity”.
A A m-o-m decrease of 2.7 percent and a y-o-y decrease of 0.9 percent was noticed in the production of ‘’water”.
