Qatar has reiterated its commitment to supporting development efforts for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and assisting them in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This came in a statement delivered by Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al Thani at the UN Headquarters in New York, during a meeting on the development of LDCs and the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for 2011-2020.
Sheikha Alya expressed Qatar’s readiness to host the Fifth UN Conference on the LCDs in March 2021.
She stressed that hosting the conference reflects Qatar’s commitment to ensuring prosperity for all.
“The conference also reflects a sense of solidarity to ensure the economic, sustainable and inclusive growth of LDCs, which would have positive repercussions on the global economic landscape,” she said.
Sheikha Alya emphasisedthe need to ensure the success of the fifth conference in order to serve as a building block in supporting the LCDs.
She pointed out that as part of its efforts to make the conference a success, Qatar contributed $500,000 to the trust fund for the conference and its preparatory process.
In this context, Sheikha Alya stressed Qatar’s support to the LDCs through a number of initiatives, expressing the country’s pride as an active, responsible and credible partner in supporting LDCs to overcome obstacles to sustainable development and economic growth.
She hailed that the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani’s announcement at the UN Climate Action Summit last September that Qatar will contribute $100 million for the support of small developing island states and the Least Developed States to deal with the dire consequences of climate change.
Sheikha Alya said the Fifth UN Conference on the LCDs is an important opportunity to renew and revitalise the global partnership and to continue to promote concrete international actions in support of the LDCs, affirming that in this way the main objective of the 2030 Agenda for Development would be achieved, which is the eradication of poverty everywhere.
