Vice-Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari on Wednesday met with Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office BarbelKofler and her accompanying delegation.
The delegation was briefed on the NHRC’s role in protecting and promoting human rights, especially with regard to the rights of children and women.
The meeting also dealt with a number of human rights issues, including the efforts of the NHRC to protect and promote workers’ rights.
The NHRC officials responded to the German delegation’s inquiries about the role of the committee in spreading the culture of human rights in the country.
They highlighted the NHRC’s five-year strategy that includes lectures and programmes targeting workers and employers, formation of expatriates’ committees in the NHRC to facilitate the handling of complaints and allocating a 24-hour hotline. They outlined the role of the reception and registration section in the Legal Affairs Department, which receives complaints and petitions and provides free legal advice.
As part of its awareness-raising and educational message, the officials said the Committee is distributing leaflets and brochures in vital institutions in the country, which contain simplified rights and duties of workers in 10 languages.
The NHRC officials also explained the role played by the Committee in monitoring and documenting human rights violations resulting from the blockade on Qatar.
The meeting was attended by Assistant Secretary-General of the NHRC Sultan bin Hassan al Jamali and a number of directors of departments and legal experts of the Committee.
