CELEBRATED names in South Indian music industry such as Karthik, Shweta Mohan, Jyotsna Radhakrishnan and Vijay Yesudas are set to perform in Doha next month.
The event, ‘Manjanipoonilavu’, will be hosted at the Al Arabi Volleyball Indoor Court on December 12 and feature performances by a team of singers led by Malayalam music director M Jayachandran.
Singers Kannur Shereef and Rahana will also lend their expertise in Muslim folklore to spice up the repertoire.
The five-hour ticketed show will start at 7pm, with tickets retailing at QR40, QR60 and QR100. They will be made available at major supermarkets and other outlets in the coming days. The lively evening will also see the presentation of the first memorial award named after late Eranholi Moosa, popularly known as the voice of Kerala’s ‘Mappila’ songs, to an emerging singer from Kerala.
An eminent panel of juries in Kerala is in the process of selecting the winner, said Mohammed Eesa, one of the organisers of the event. The name would be announced towards the end of the month, he added.
The award was instituted by a group of expatriate Keralites in Qatar in an attempt to encourage art and culture under the banner of Friends of Rhythm and Mercy (FORM Qatar).
Their endeavour also seeks to provide monetary assistance every year for four “most-deserving” financially-constrained artistes in Kerala. In addition, the group aims to extend all possible help to talented but struggling children in the field of art in the Indian state. The debut edition of the Eranholi Moosa Memorial Award will recognise excellence in the Mappila song category, with the coming editions celebrating talents in other streams of music.
Mappila song or Mappilappattu is a folklore genre of music popularised by the Muslim community in north Kerala. Sung in colloquial ‘Mappila’ dialect of Malayalam laced with Arabic, Mappila songs are known for their exuberance in rendition, semantic nuances and rustic innocence.
The Manjanipoonilavu event will also honour M Jayachandran, who has completed 25 years in the Malayalam film music industry.
FORM Qatar has been constituted under the patronage of expatriates PN Baburaj, SainulAbdeen and KM Verghese. Its office bearers include KK Usman (president), Anwar Babu (working president), DrSamad (vice-president), EM Sudheer (general secretary), Dr Sameer Kalanthan (joint secretary) and Mohammed Eesa (treasurer).
Mohammed Ashraf, Salman Ilayidom, Rasakh (Rotana), Mansoor Ali (One 2 One) and TahirPattara are the executive members of the organisation.
