Minister of State for Energy Affairs HE Saad Sherida al Kaabi described the Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO) as a “source of pride” for the country as the petrochemical giant celebrated its 50th anniversary on Monday.
At the golden jubilee celebration attended by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani and Crown Prince of Norway Haakon Magnus, Kaabi recollected QAFCO’s journey from a fledgling factory complex to a world leader in the production of chemical fertilizers.
QAFCO began its first production in 1973, the minister recalled, producing 900 tonnes of ammonia and 1,000 tonnes of urea a day.
Today, he said, the company churns out 3.8 million tonnes of ammonia and 5.6 million tonnes of urea every 24 hours from six integrated production lines for exports to all over the world.
This makes QAFCO the largest single-site producer of ammonia and urea in the world, Kaabi said.
QAFCO is the first company to be set up in Qatar with the partnership of a foreign investor, the minister said, adding that it also formed the first partnership model for many Qatari joint ventures with partners from around the world.
“QAFCO was the building block of Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), the first Qatari petrochemical manufacturer exporting its products from Mesaieed Port to the world, and a leading company in training and developing Qatari human resources in the petrochemical sector,” he said.
The minister also said QAFCO was the cornerstone for the foundation of Industries Qatar (IQ), the largest listed industrial group in the Qatari Exchange.
“QAFCO has been always committed to firmly maintain the highest environmental standards and develop creative products to improve food production capacity without harming the nature.” Moving forward, the minister said, the company will seek to build on these achievements over the past five decades to etch an international landmark on the global petrochemical map.
“We have also capitalised on this success by establishing several joint ventures, such as Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO), Qatar Chemical Company (Q-CHEM), Qatar Fuel Additives Company (QAFAC), Qatar Steel, and others.
“Talking about joint ventures, we should not forget to mention Qatargas, the world’s largest liquefied natural gas company, which plays a vital role in securing a clean energy resource for the entire world. We are also so proud of our gas-to-liquid industries through ORYX GTL, and Pearl GTL, the world’s largest plant to turn natural gas into cleaner-burning fuels and
lubricants.”
