Come Friday and all roads lead to Doha Sports Park located behind the Doha Golf Club where celebrity South African chef Jenny Morris will be displaying her culinary skills at the Ubuntu Bash, Heritage Day Bazaar organised by the South African embassy. Renowned South African singer, songwriter and singer, Jimmy Nevis will also enthrall the audience at the event.
African ambassadors have been invited at the event. Nigerians, Ugandans, Kenyans, among others are expected to attend the event in large numbers.
The event will have more than 20 stalls selling South African delicacies such as bunny chows (South African style curry served in half a loaf of bread), boerewors rolls ( typical South African sausage), koeksisters (a traditional baked dessert), among others. Mainstays on every South African dinner table Chakalaka and pap; bobotie, a South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping; mixed salads; lambs and sausages will also be on the centre stage. Zulu and Xhosa dishes that will be served include a firm favorite made from crushed corn and beans. Besides, South African franchise Nando’s will be there with its signature chicken.
Ubuntu means “I am because we are”, and also “humanity towards others” is best known as a humanist philosophy associated with Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The Ubuntu Bash, Heritage Day is marked on September 24 every year to celebrate the cultural wealth of the South African nation. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. Last year, the late South African President Nelson Mandela’s (Madiba) grandson, Chief Mandla Mandela was the guest of honour at the same venue.
The event will feature a number of activities for all age groups.
South African Ambassador to Qatar HE Faizel Moosa said that the festival will start at 2pm and it is not only an event for South Africans but also other communities can attend. “Everyone is invited to attend.”
He said that Jenny Morris will have a session for children where she will show them the art of cake decoration. The chef will have a second session where she will demonstrate how to cook some delicacies. Earlier this year, Morris was among the international chefs who offered cooking masterclass at Qatar International Food Festival.
The chef, who is also known as ‘The Giggling Gourmet’, who is a radio and television personality and has excelled in a number of typically South African dishes was also in Qatar earlier this year where she demonstrated culinary skills at an event organised by the embassy.
On the other hand, the renowned singer, Nevis will entertain the crowd at the event which will continue until 10pm.
The ambassador said that there will be more than 20 vendors displaying typical South delicacies including curries and sweets. “These will be traditional home-made by South African community in Qatar. These are vendors with small businesses in Qatar.
He said that this will be an opportunity for South Africa to showcase what it can offer in terms of culinary and music.
According to the ambassador, there will be fun-filled events for children as well. Besides, there will be a walking football whereby the retired football lovers will play. “We will have walking football which is a way of encouraging people to participate in a sporting activity. It is a way to encourage healthy living.”
The ambassador said that last year the event was a success and believes that this time the event will be much bigger. “We had more than 2,500 people who attended the event and this year we expect more.”
