Speaker of the Shura Council HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al Mahmoud has called for the support and participation of diplomatic missions in Qatar as well as other nations in the upcoming 7th Global Conference of Parliamentarians Against Corruption, which will be held at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Convention Hotel on December 9 and 10.
The conference is a joint initiative of the Shura Council Qatar and Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC), an international alliance of legislators working together to combat corruption, strengthen democracy and uphold the rule of law.
Speaking at a meeting with heads of diplomatic missions in Qatar on Monday, Mahmoud underlined Qatar’s intense campaign against corruption which he described as a “scourge of nations”.
“The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption is the biggest international organisation working towards combating corruption. We are confident that you will share with our battle against corruption as it is the scourge of nations. We have sent invitations to the presidents of your respective countries and every house speaker of parliaments. We are prepared to welcome them and their delegation in this conference,” he said.
The GOPAC Global Conference is a premier opportunity for delegates to participate in thoughtful discussions and workshops aimed at ensuring parliamentarians have the skills to combat corruption and providing a platform to share challenges and successes. The organisation works closely with a network of allied international institutions, including the United Nations, the UNDP, INTERPOL, the World Bank and the council of Europe, among others.
In an official invitation letter signed by Mahmoud and GOPAC Chair Dr Fadli Zion, it is stated that the two entities look forward to welcoming a record number of current and former parliamentarians, government officials, academics and anti-corruption advocates from around the world.
The statement also cited that each global conference since its founding has enabled GOPAC to flourish and the network of dedicated parliamentarians to grow. Its previous conferences were held in Indonesia, the Philippines, Canada, Tanzania, Kuwait and Mexico and have been integral to advancements in the organisation’s agenda and in furthering capacity building and knowledge of key anti-corruption tools and mechanisms.
Mahmoud reiterated the importance of the cooperation and support of the diplomatic missions in Qatar.
