The healthy competition among tech-focused companies based at Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) is helping drive innovation in Qatar forward, according to the CEO of an international network service provider that aims to place the nation at the forefront of the digital connectivity market.
Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has been based at QSTP, part of Qatar Foundation Research, Development and Innovation and the region’s primary hub of technology innovation and entrepreneurship, for almost 10 years. During this time, it has developed a network spanning more than 40,000km – equivalent to the circumference of the earth – and capable of serving two billion users worldwide.
It’s one of the many commercial enterprises – from established international tech firms to nationally, and regionally-founded technology companies and rising startups – that, at QSTP, are developing and delivering the products and services that have helped establish Qatar as the regional leader of scientific and technology innovation, tech-based entrepreneurship and high-tech businesses.
Cengiz Oztelcan, CEO of GBI, said the presence of so several technology change-makers in a single location is helping push back the boundaries of tech innovation in Qatar. “QSTP is a true hub for innovation within Qatar, and we’re surrounded by world-leading businesses.”
“The smartest and most innovative people in Qatar are right at our doorstep, providing a great space for collaboration as well as competition. It’s this competition that drives us to push our business forward and support the new, innovative ideas being developed at QSTP.”
GBI is a global cloud, connectivity and content enabler, owning and operating a smart, fully-managed service network of multi-layer terrestrial and sub-sea cables that connect East and West via the Middle East. It owns the infrastructure of cables and designs products that carry digital information, and provides the smart management tools that allow their systems to ensure this information is delivered in the fastest, most reliable manner.
In 2008, GBI recognised that Qatar’s location made it ideal for establishing a hub for linking systems from the East and the West. “GBI offers an innovative way for globally-present companies to connect their international locations and users worldwide with each other or with the Cloud, to serve future technical and management needs. We operate in an industry that has been defined by physical cables, whether in the sea or on land, but to GBI the future will be defined by software,” said Oztelcan.
“In 10 years, we will have a greater depth of network infrastructure in the Gulf, but also across key destinations in Europe, Asia and Africa. This will allow us to be present in even more key financial and communications hubs across the globe. We will be playing a mission-critical role in the digital economy in Qatar, the Middle East and across the world, alongside hosting the most popular content providers here in Qatar,” he concluded.
