Ooredoo, Qatar’s leading telecommunications operator, today announced an exciting upgrade programme for its network, in line with the significant growth that our beloved Qatar has witnessed lately in various fields and to ensure offering the most advanced services to all residents, including future 5G use cases, in partnership with global mobile giant Ericsson.
The telecommunications leader announced it is working with industry giant Ericsson to upgrade existing network. The upgrade, which is being rolled out over a period of several weeks, will bring new levels of innovation to healthcare, education and industry as a key driver behind the ambitious 5G expansion plans, with Ericsson being chosen as a partner thanks to its long-established position as market leader and technology pioneer.
Ooredoo will leverage Ericsson’s industry-leading Ericsson Radio System, 5G New Radio solutions and its 10 Gbps microwave network to fully digitally transform and modernise its existing mobile network in order to ensure it is fully prepared to introduce the latest technologies in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and ahead of 2022’s events.
5G has been much anticipated in Qatar and across the world, given its potential to change the way internet users experience connectivity. A 5G network has the capacity to allow 10,000 times the volume of traffic compared to LTE, and provides peak capacity of 10 Gbps. Ooredoo has already showcased a number of exciting use cases to give the public an insight into just how much the 5G network will change lives: it demonstrated autonomous vehicles by piloting the world’s first 5G-enabled aerial taxi drone; it trialled on-the-go WiFi in moving vehicles; remote medical treatment was shown to be possible with haptic gloves, scanners and joysticks; the latest VR and AR experiences were showcased; 5G-enabled security for mega-events has been displayed at mega-events; and many more.
Ooredoo is the first operator in the world to launch 5G services and the recent Emir Cup was an ideal opportunity for Ooredoo to showcase some of the most exciting 5G developments and demonstrate how 5G will revolutionise healthcare and sports enjoyment. Its ground-breaking Virtual Stadium and the 5G Connected Ambulance were both put to the test; the Virtual Stadium allowed fans to experience a completely new way of enjoying sports - combining Virtual Reality with user engagement and interaction and the 5G network - while the 5G Connected Ambulance allowed attendees a glimpse into the near future where the best medical professionals, located anywhere around the world, will be able to diagnose and treat patients here in Qatar using 5G technology.
The telecommunications leader is demonstrating its commitment to its own corporate social responsibility strategy and the aims of Qatar Vision 2030 - sustainability, economic growth and environmental management – with the roll-out of its 5G network; despite the phenomenal capabilities of the new 5G network, the technology currently being deployed provides vastly superior 5G performance with the smallest site footprint and the lowest possible energy consumption.
Speaking of the network upgrade, Yousuf Abdulla al Kubaisi, Chief Operating Officer, Ooredoo Qatar, said: “We’re delighted to be working with such a major international powerhouse to ensure Qatar is at the forefront of technological advancement, in line with our corporate strategy which aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030. We have long been pioneers in the development of a full commercial 5G network, laying the foundations for a bold and ambitious future, and we are excited to see its rapid progression in partnership with Ericsson. This upgrade represents a major expansion of our 5G network in Qatar as we work towards 5G becoming mainstream in the country.”
Al Kubaisi added: “By investing in high-speed and low-latency 5G technology, we will be able to meet the growing data traffic demands and deliver the high-quality network required to offer the very best Smart City services for Qatar. Our partnership with Ericsson will help us develop Qatar beyond all current expectations; it will enable its Smart Cities, its Internet of Things capabilities and its potential to host immersive mega-events. 5G-enabled services will have an enormous impact on our everyday lives; they will be instrumental in developing the kind of Smart Cities in which we want to live, in transforming society and industry and in enhancing people’s digital lives. We are beyond excited to see how the future of Qatar unfolds, and we are proud to be working with Ericsson to make 5G dreams a reality.”
A comprehensive communication plan has ensured customers have been made aware of the network upgrade, in case any temporary interruptions to normal service are encountered. Technical staff have assured customers any disruption is expected to be minor and short-lived, with the post-upgrade benefits far outweighing any minor inconvenience in the short term, and customers are encouraged to contact Ooredoo with any queries about service provision while the upgrade is underway.
