Islamabad: A prominent Pakistani journalist known for his critical articles about the country’s powerful military has quit his job amid mounting concerns about the pressure exerted by authorities on the press. There has been an outpouring of tributes to Cyril Almeida, of the English-language Dawn newspaper, since he made the announcement on Twitter, with many expressing wories about the state of media freedom in Pakistan.
“I have resigned from Dawn and ended the Sunday column,” he said without giving any reason for the decision.
Almeida won the International Press Institute’s 71st World Press Freedom Hero award this year. (DPA)
